HISTORICAL OVERVIEW

OF THE CITY OF CHANIA

The Venetian walls of Chania were built between 1538 and 1645 in order to deal with the impending Turkish intervention. The fortification was about the construction of a quadrangular wall, which is reinforced by trench and buttress from bastions and rampart. The walls were retained for years until the time of the Cretan State, when a substantial part of them was demolished.
