Square 1821 – Splantzia

It was the pre-eminent Turkish quarter of the city centered on today’s 1821 square. Today, on its northwestern edge, there is the Venetian church of Agios Roccos, to the east of the square, the church of Agios Nikolaos, and in the center a huge plane tree, on which the Ottomans on May 19, 1821, hanged Bishop Kissamos Melchizedek.

The Venetian Walls

The Venetian walls of Chania were built between 1538 and 1645 in order to deal with the impending Turkish intervention. The fortification was about the construction of a quadrangular wall, which is reinforced by trench and buttress from bastions and rampart. The walls were retained for years until the time of the Cretan State, when a substantial part of them was demolished.

Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (Chrysopigi)

The Monastery of Zoodochos Pigi is an important monastic center of Chania until nowadays. It was founded in the late 16th century, in a place where already was operating a small monastery. It suffered significant damage from the Ottoman and German troops in 1976 and was rebuilt by the sorority, which continues the rich social and cultural life of the monastery.

Monastery of Our Lady of the Angels (Gouverneto)

The Monastery of Gouverneto, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, is located close to the Trinity, in the mountains of Akrotiri. It was built between 1537 and 1548, it flourished during the late Venetian period and suffered several disasters during the period of Ottoman rule. On the north of the monastery there is a large number of hermitages, the cave of St. John the Hermit and the famous “Catholic.”
